Last week, Hizbollah, a powerful force
in Lebanese politics pulled out of the coalition government over its
co-operation with the UN tribunal’s investigation into Rafiq al-Hariri’s
assassination.
Hezbollah ministers and their members in parliament pulled out of Lebanon's government causing it to collapse.
Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of
Hizbollah rejects the findings of the tribunal, saying it is a
conspiracy by the United States and Israel, and they will not back the
caretaker prime minister Saad Hariri to form a new government.
The Netherlands-based tribunal
investigating the 2005 bomb blast that killed Rafiq al-Hariri, the
former prime minister, is likely to label Hizbollah as the scapegoat
behind the attack.
Hizbollah (Party of God), the Islamic
organisation with a powerful military wing that drove Israel out of
south Lebanon in 2000 commands strong support in the region. The Second
Lebanon War in 2006 was mainly a military conflict between Israel and
Hizbollah which ended with the defeat of Israeli forces in Lebanon.
