Hosni Mubarak, the 82 year old Egyptian
President has announced the nation that he will not seek re-election
but is going to stay in office until the next election.
In response to President Mubarak’s
announcement, more than a million protesters gathered in and around
Cairo’s Thahrir Square, and tens of thousands gathered in cities all
across Egypt began to demand that he should step down immediately.
The next presidential election is in
September 2011, and Mubarak wants to stay in power to work for a
peaceful transfer of power to ensure the stability of the nation.
Even after President Mubarak’s speech,
the nationwide public protests against his dictatorial regime show no
signs of abating. Almost 30 years of brutal dictatorial rule has lost
Mubarak the people’s support and they do not trust him anymore.
The ongoing protests coupled with
violent clashes on the streets and the subsequent collapse of law and
order in the country has plunged Egypt into catastrophe.
