Tunisian President flees country and army takes control

After weeks of violent clashes between the protesters and the security forces of Tunisia, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has finally fled the country leaving army to take control.

The reports say the country’s airport has been surrounded by troops and the country’s airspace remains closed.

Mohammed Ghannouchi, the Prime Minister says he is assuming the duties of an interim President.    

The deposed President Ben Ali dismissed the government and imposed a state of emergency promising fresh elections within six months to quell the uprising.   

The protests began in Tunisia over unemployment and rising food prices. The recent clashes in the streets of the capital, Tunis left dozens of people dead.
