Sheikh Zindani joins protesters in Yemen

The eminent Muslim scholar Sheikh Abdul Majeed al-Zindani joined several thousand anti-government protesters in Sana to demand the ouster of Ali Abdulla Saleh.

Abdul Majeed al-Zindani
Al-Zindani was guarded by 10 men armed with AK 47 assault rifles and was shaded from the scorching sun by aides wielding umbrellas as he spoke in calling for an Islamic state to be established in Yemen. The Sheikh’s word as a spiritual leader carries considerable political and moral weight in Yemen.

The United States is extremely nervous about the possibility of the collapse of Ali Abdullah Saleh’s government in Yemen, believing that it would pose a serious threat to Saudi Arabia.

The Commission on Scientific Signs in the Quran and Sunnah is an organization founded by Sheikh Zindani with the backing of the Muslim World League (Rabita) in 1984 in Saudi Arabia. He is also the founder and head of the Iman University in Yemen.

Al-Zindani, a charismatic Yemeni academic who holds high level certification in Biology and Chemistry from Ain Shams University in Egypt is also an influential member of Yemen’s al-islah (Yemeni Congregation for Reform).

Sheikh Zindani has worked with Professor Keith L. Moore (University of Toronto) to prepare an Islamic edition of his text book on anatomy and embryology in which he testified that God had revealed the Quran to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

The US Treasury Department has accused Sheikh Zindani of having a long history of working with Osama bin Laden and serving as one of his spiritual guides. The US has put Al-Zindani’s name on the list of ‘Specially Designated Global Terrorist’ along with US born Anwar al-Awlaki who was once a lecturer at Iman University in Yemen.

Many video tapes containing the scientific miracles of Quran explained and narrated by Sheikh Zindani became popular among Maldivian students in the early 1990’s.
