Speaking about the current unrest and
demand for regime change in many Arab countries, Khamenei said it was
“an Islamic awareness in connection with Iran's great Islamic
Revolution.” He said these movements will eventually lead to the defeat
of the United States.
Khamenei also said Hosni Mubarak was a
companion and confident servant of Zionists, and Egypt under his rule
has been unable to take a single step towards prosperity.
The Supreme Leader’s remarks were
received by cheering crowds of worshippers at Tehran University who
chanted “Death to America! Death to Israel!”
Iran supports the protests in Egypt and
has warned the United States against interfering in Egyptian people’s
popular movement to topple Mubarak.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been supreme
leader of Iran since June 1989 when the Assembly of Experts appointed
him to succeed Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
