Observing a day of fast on 10 Muharram (Ashura) expiates for all minor sins of the past year. The Prophet (PBUH) used to be very keen to make sure he fasted on the day of Ashura for the great reward that it brings.
In the words of the Prophet (PBUH), “..fasting the day of Ashura I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” Narrated by Muslim.
The reason why the Prophet (PBUH) fasted on the day of Ashura and urged the people to do same is mentioned in the saying (hadeeth) narrated by Bukhaari from Ibn Abbaas, who said: the Prophet (PBUH) came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He said, “What is this?” The Jews said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (Pharaoh) and Moses fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Moses than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.
The people said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Next year, if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) had passed away. (Narrated by Muslim).
Therefore, it is recommended to fast both the ninth and the tenth of Muharram, because the Prophet (PBUH) fasted the tenth and intended to fast the ninth.
It is rewarded even if someone fasts only on the tenth of Muharram (Ashura).
