Some protesters set ablaze the Pakistani monument erected
for the SAARC leaders’ summit in Addu City. The protesters demanded that the
monument be removed as it featured ‘idols and objects of worship’ something
which is not allowed under Maldivian law.
Ahmed Shiyam, sub-inspector of police confirmed that the
incident occurred before dawn and the protesters escaped before police arrived
at the scene.
Meanwhile, two young men who toppled the monument in an earlier protest led by members of opposition parties last Wednesday still remain in police custody, facing charges of vandalism.
